Today I want to talk to you today about having a purpose in your business versus building a brand. I’ve never called myself an expert or guru or ninja or any other term thrown around so loosely today by people in my line of work. Instead, I have a purpose.
My purpose is to help contractors who want to market the great work they do but find it difficult, and I completely understand where they are coming from.
You see, God blessed me with a big mouth and a flair for the over-stated, perfect for marketing and advertising types. What I didn’t get was any skill to build a thing. Nothing. Not even a bird house in wood shop in 10th grade.
When I need something done, I have to rely on people who are experts at their chosen craft. They don’t come in and declare themselves construction experts or ninjas or gurus, they just put their heads down and do the work.
That’s what I’ve liked the most about working with the trades for the last 20 years, the blue-collar aspect of just getting shit done and not bragging about it. And it’s why I’ve dedicated much of my adult life to helping contractors sell more, advertise better and market to buyers.
Now, you can like me or hate me, whatever your flavor, I’m fine with it because I’m focused on my purpose. This keeps things very clear for me. While lots of companies and people have come and gone in construction marketing, there are only a few who have stuck it out, and that is probably because we all have a purpose, not just a brand.
That’s what I want to know about you
What is your purpose? What is it that you wanted to be when you started your company? What was the dream you had when you started your business?
Then I want you to answer this question
How close have you come to realizing those goals, and what has held you back? What are the roadblocks you are facing? What thing do you wish you could wave a magic wand over and it all be ok?
Seriously, if you read this newsletter and you get something out of it, I’m asking you to do me a solid and let me know because I’m interested in finding out where you are stuck. Email me right now at darren at darrenslaughter.com and let me know!
