Most of the good to great salespeople I’ve ever known were bad to terrible as managers. I think the main reason is good salespeople tend to be lone wolves who prefer to work alone. They also have giant egos and can’t stand to hear the word ‘no.’ None of those traits make for a good manager. As a construction marketing consultant, I talk to two people in an organization; the owner/President/CEO and/or the marketing head.
Neither may have been a salesperson, so when hiring for sales management, be careful not to ruin two positions; the salesperson you promote and the job you took them out of!
