As a construction marketing consultant, I’ll be the first to admit that at first glance, that makes no sense at all, but bear with me. Everyone is in the market to make things easier and more convenient these days, probably even you.
You don’t even have to spend time or creative energy to build out a beautiful bedroom suit. Go to a big furniture store for the furniture, buy the perfect comforter set from a local big box store complete with sheets, and sleep like a baby that night.
You now have a semi-custom bedroom with little effort. Your bed looks just like the one on the package; just like a few thousand others purchased from the same shop. You may change the pillow style or make a few other small changes, but the fact remains that your bedroom is not as unique as it could be. It isn’t customized to fit your lifestyle and your personal tastes.
What does that have to do with website design for your construction business?
A lot, really! DIY websites exist as a place on the internet for your customers to find you, but they don’t showcase any of your personality or provide any type of true customization. And quality content that helps sell your services…? Forget about it.
DIY or Professional Website Design?
DIY website design is very similar to the bed in a bag method of home decoration I just mentioned. There’s very little customization; in fact, it’s more like stock or semi-custom vs. custom. You can take the same elements offered to everyone else who uses the DIY website creator and rearrange them to make it look a little different, but fundamentally, it’s the same. Here are a few other things to keep in mind.
A professional website designer will guide you every step of the way. I help my clients choose a layout, which pictures suit their website best, how to lay out the navigation menu, and much more. We discuss everything from colors to future marketing efforts before the website design process begins.
You won’t have an experienced website designer as a guide if you choose to use a DIY website creator. You will have to rely on your own opinions and Internet searches for the information you need.
Not everyone is comfortable writing about themselves, and that’s okay. Our professional writing team will create an About Us page that will make you want to hire yourself. One of our clients told us he knew his website content was working because his wife wanted to remodel the kitchen after reading about how good he was.
Lastly, I’ll briefly mention budget. How much do you normally spend on your marketing budget? How well does your current marketing system work for you? I can only assume that since you’re here looking for a construction marketing expert’s advice, you feel that your current online marketing efforts need some help. So seriously, you can skimp on your marketing budget and continue with mediocre results, or you can hire someone with construction marketing experience to help out and write it all off as a marketing expense at the end of the year anyway.
Website Design is More than Meets the Eye
Website design, when done correctly, involves much more than choosing the style of text and colors you’ll use, and adding your logo to the top. You need to know that a certain amount of white space is a good thing, pictures tell a story, and your written content needs to be top notch. I don’t know a lot of successful contractors who have the time to properly research and learn website design and still provide excellent craftsmanship on the job.
So is your website going to be a semi-custom bed in a bag style site or a professionally written custom site that truly showcases your business and your skills?
